Why UK students look abroad
Competition for UK medical school is brutal, and even successful applicants face £9,250+ a year in tuition (far more for those classed as international). Coming back to work in the UK: the GMC and UKMLA
Here’s the part to be honest about. To practise in the UK, you must gain GMC registration, and the GMC has moved from the old two-part PLAB exam to the UKMLA (UK Medical Licensing Assessment) — a single assessment now required for graduates joining the register. The pathway broadly involves: confirming eligibility, passing the required licensing assessment, demonstrating English proficiency, and completing an acceptable internship pattern before you can take up an NHS role.
Be realistic: the Georgia route back to the UK is longer and more self-directed than studying at a UK school. It suits determined, organised students who are committed to sitting the UKMLA. If that’s you, it can save years of waiting and a great deal of money.
